Over 22K Migrants Sent Home as Libya Steps Up Border Control

Libya – Major General Salah al-Khfifi, head of the Anti-Illegal-Migration Authority, says the agency deported 22,780 irregular migrants of various nationalities between 1 January and 30 June 2025. He described the campaign as a bid to safeguard national security while observing humanitarian standards, carried out with direct backing from the General Command and the Government of Stability.

Legal framework and inter-agency coordination
Al-Khfifi told LANA that operations are conducted strictly under existing laws and regulations, in full coordination with relevant state bodies responsible for apprehension, shelter and repatriation.

  • 486 migrants deported on orders from the Public Prosecutor

  • 2,000 removed on security-related grounds

  • 2,090 intercepted while attempting to reach Europe

  • 16,230 caught entering Libya illegally

  • 1,958 cases of hepatitis

  • 15 cases of HIV/AIDS

  • 1 case of typhoid fever

Al-Khfifi stressed that protecting national security and public health remains the agency’s core mission, adding that every procedure—from detention to deportation—follows humanitarian guidelines.
