African Group Warns Over Violations of Libya’s Frozen Assets, Demands Withdrawal of Foreign Forces

African concerns over Libya’s frozen funds

LIBYA – The representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the UN Security Council, speaking on behalf of the three-member African group comprising Liberia, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has welcomed the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until the end of October 2027, while voicing concern over continuing violations of Libya’s frozen assets abroad.

Support for the political process and unifying institutions

Speaking after Friday’s Security Council session, in remarks carried by the Libyan News Agency (LANA), the representative said Libya was at a crossroads that requires the attention of the international community to help it bring the political process to a successful conclusion and move beyond the current phase.

He stressed the need to continue unifying Libya’s national institutions, including the military and security institutions, paving the way for free and fair elections.

Weapons, mercenaries and frozen assets

He expressed the African group’s concern over the flow of illicit weapons into Libya in violation of international resolutions, and called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries as part of the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the recommendations of the “5+5” Joint Military Commission, in support of peace and stability.

He also expressed his country’s and the African group’s concerns over the continuing violations of Libya’s frozen financial assets abroad, stressing that these funds are held for the benefit of the Libyan people alone.
