Al-Marash: Maritime Agreement With Turkey Legally Complete Despite Objections From Some Countries

Ratification strengthens the agreement’s legal standing

LIBYA – Political analyst Kamel Al-Marash has said the Libyan-Turkish agreement delimiting the maritime economic zone in the Eastern Mediterranean is now complete in all its legislative and legal elements, following its approval by the Libyan and Turkish parliaments and its registration with the United Nations and the relevant international organisations.

In exclusive comments to Libya Al-Hadath TV, Al-Marash said that, in his assessment, the agreement is free of flaws under international law, and that objections by other countries do not halt its entry into force, as objecting parties can seek arbitration before international bodies without suspending its implementation pending a final ruling.

Libya’s rights in the economic zone

He added that the agreement gives Libya a wide maritime economic zone rich in oil and gas, arguing that Libya is not a party to any potential dispute between Turkey and other Eastern Mediterranean countries, and that its rights and legal share would not be significantly affected if the matter went to arbitration, since the dispute would be between Ankara and the objecting countries.
