Bashagha: Libya Is Going Through Its Worst Phase, but Giving In to Despair Is Not an Option

Bashagha criticises deteriorating conditions in Libya

LIBYA – Former prime minister Fathi Bashagha has said that, in his view, the overall situation in Libya has reached “its worst phase”, citing administrative chaos, a near-total collapse of national institutions, a decline in the rule of law and in social morals, widespread plunder, fraud and the seizure of people’s livelihoods.

Criticism of the overall picture

In a Facebook post, Bashagha added that he now saw only what he described as ugly images, offensive voices and nauseating scenes, noting a widespread belief that there is no hope of reform and that the way out of the current situation has been blocked.

Rejecting surrender to despair

Bashagha stressed that this does not mean giving in to despair, citing the Quranic verse: “Until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals.”
