Judicial Source: Al-Marimi Released, Injured in Stairwell Fall While Awaiting Exit

Libya – A judicial source told Al-Marsad that prosecutors ordered activist Abdul-Munem al-Marimi transferred to their custody immediately after learning of his recent arrest, and clarified the circumstances surrounding his brief detention and subsequent injury.

Weak charges and swift release
The case file reached the Public Prosecutor’s Office at midday without the detainee himself, listing accusations of demonstrating without a permit and “collaborating” with an Egyptian national. When al-Marimi appeared at 5 pm, the prosecutor learned that the Egyptian in question was a well-known journalist who had interviewed him as a political activist for a recognised media outlet. After reviewing the evidence, the prosecutor deemed the allegations baseless and released al-Marimi following an interrogation that lasted less than 15 minutes.

Stairwell fall before departure
While waiting for formalities to conclude, al-Marimi asked to use the restroom. Moments later he leapt over a stairwell railing and fell, an incident captured on security cameras, the source said. Guards rushed him to Al-Khalil Clinic, where doctors diagnosed bruising; he remains under observation as a precaution.

Panic suspected; family witnessed incident
Investigators believe al-Marimi may have panicked at the prospect of being handed to another agency, unaware that his release had already been approved. His family was present and witnessed the entire incident, the source added, confirming there is no indication of foul play.
