Kleesh says unions agree on protest action and on holding to teachers’ rights
Libya – Wasim Kleesh, a member of the General Council of the General Teachers’ Union, said teachers’ sit-ins inside schools and municipalities were continuing, with their unions across the country agreed on protest steps and determined to secure their rights before the new school year begins.
Coordination for a protest stand
Speaking by phone on a Libya Al-Ahrar bulletin broadcast from Turkey and followed by Al-Marsad, Kleesh said municipal unions had called for a protest stand, with the date to be coordinated later. The education minister had contacted teachers’ unions in the municipalities and promised to convey their demands to the Prime Minister’s Office, but no official response had been issued by the time he spoke, he said.
Teachers had been forced to raise their voices and hold sit-ins to ensure their demands were heard and dealt with realistically, Kleesh added, stressing that the protest steps had been announced by teachers across Libya. He expressed hope that the government would consider the demands and work to resolve them realistically to avoid escalation.
