Libya’s Attorney General Details Probe into Activist’s Death, Releases CCTV Timeline

Libya – The Office of the Attorney General has released a detailed account of the investigation into the injury and subsequent death of activist Abdul-Munem Rajab al-Marimi, supported by surveillance footage that tracks his arrival at the prosecutor’s building and his fatal attempt to leap from an internal staircase.

Interrogation, release order—and a deadly fall
Internal Security delivered al-Marimi’s case file to prosecutors on Thursday, 3 July 2025. He was summoned that evening for questioning, denied the charges, and was granted an immediate release order. While waiting in a designated area, he visited the restroom, greeted staff on his return and walked toward the reception hall—then vaulted over a stairwell gap to the ground floor, sustaining critical injuries. Rushed to hospital, he underwent emergency surgery but died on Friday evening, 4 July 2025.

Scene examination and evidence collection
Investigators inspected the fall site, secured all video recordings and allowed the family and defence lawyers to review the material. Testimony was taken from on-duty staff and independent witnesses, with defence motions duly registered.

Forensic panel and autopsy mandates
The South Tripoli prosecutor viewed the body immediately after death, documenting visible trauma and commissioning a team of forensic pathologists to:

  • re-examine the scene and study all video evidence;

  • conduct a full autopsy to determine cause of death, injury count and mechanism;

  • note any signs of violence between 30 June and 3 July;

  • collect biological samples to screen for toxins, drugs or other agents;

  • consult international experts if required.

Legality of arrest under review
The inquiry also covers the lawfulness of al-Marimi’s arrest, the conditions of his detention and his treatment from the moment of capture until the incident.
