‘We Do Not Accept Insults’: Lt Gen Saddam Haftar Calls for Official Protest Over Trump’s Remarks on Libya

Affirming Libya’s sovereignty and national dignity

LIBYA – Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Lt Gen Saddam Haftar on Sunday denounced remarks made by US President Donald Trump about Libya and its people, describing them as offensive and unacceptable. He said electoral wrangling and domestic political considerations cannot justify insulting countries and peoples or diminishing their dignity.

In a post on his verified Facebook account, Lt Gen Saddam Haftar stressed that Libya is an independent, sovereign state whose national dignity stands above all other considerations, rejecting any insult or disparagement of the country under any circumstances or on any political pretext.

Call for an official protest through diplomatic channels

Lt Gen Saddam Haftar called for a clear official stance, urging the relevant authorities, each within its own remit, to take the steps provided for under diplomatic rules and conventions, including lodging a formal protest with the US side and demanding that the insult be addressed in a manner commensurate with its gravity.

Cooperation with Washington and commitment to mutual respect

Lt Gen Saddam Haftar affirmed that Libya’s commitment to ties of cooperation and friendship with the United States cannot be separated from its insistence on mutual respect, which he described as a firm foundation of the country’s relations with all states.
