UN denies participation in migrant settlement
Libya – The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator in Libya, Ulrika Richardson, met on Tuesday with the League of Arab States ambassador to Libya, Sheikh Al-Mukhtar Mohamed Mahmoud, to discuss opportunities to strengthen cooperation in support of Libya’s development priorities.
Governance, development and fighting smuggling
Talks focused on economic governance, strengthening national institutions and advancing inclusive economic development across Libya.
The two sides also exchanged views on drawing on the experience of neighbouring Arab states in confronting the illicit economy and human-trafficking and smuggling networks, in ways that support Libya’s territorial integrity and sustainable development.
Denial of participation in migrant settlement
In light of recent incidents targeting United Nations premises, they also discussed the migration challenges facing Libya and UN efforts to support national authorities in addressing them.
Richardson reiterated that the United Nations has at no time participated, and is not currently participating, in the resettlement of migrants or foreigners in Libya.
She also affirmed the UN’s commitment to continue working closely with regional and international partners, including the League of Arab States, in support of peace, stability and effective governance in Libya.
