Sovereignty, cooperation and reconstruction files at Benghazi meeting
LIBYA – Speaker of the House of Representatives Salehin Abdulnabi met German Ambassador to Libya Arvid Enders and his accompanying delegation on Monday at the House of Representatives’ Diwan headquarters in Benghazi, discussing bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation on economic and political files.
Praise for German cooperation in the economy, health and education
Abdulnabi welcomed the ambassador, praising the history of Libyan-German relations and what he described as Berlin’s commitment to not interfering in Libya’s internal affairs. He pointed to past economic cooperation, Libyans’ trust in German industry and in the projects Germany has completed, as well as German expertise in health and education.
Unifying institutions and a nationwide budget
He said positive signs were emerging in Libya’s situation and that he was in constant contact with the various parties with the aim of unifying sovereign institutions, with moves towards a unified budget and an import budget that would meet the country’s needs throughout the year.
Maritime memorandum with Turkey
He stressed that the House of Representatives’ ratification of the Libyan-Turkish memorandum of understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean was a sovereign decision that fell within Libya’s right to look after its interests without harming those of other states, and was in line with international law.
Irregular migration and solutions in countries of origin
The meeting also touched on irregular migration. Abdulnabi said Libya bears its consequences as a transit country and called for the efforts of the countries concerned to be unified to find economic solutions that bring stability to countries of origin and curb migrant flows.
