Boosting intelligence cooperation against terrorism and crime
LIBYA – Presidential Council member Musa Al-Koni on Wednesday reviewed with the head of the Libyan Intelligence Service, Gen Hussein Al-Ayeb, the results of the high-level regional meeting of heads of security and counter-terrorism agencies, which Benghazi hosted and which concluded over the past two days under the slogan “Addressing the Convergence of Terrorism and Organised Crime in Africa”.
43 security delegations and more than 20 intelligence chiefs
Al-Ayeb briefed Al-Koni on the meeting, which he co-chaired with the head of Morocco’s General Directorate for Studies and Documentation (DGED), Yassine Mansouri. It was attended by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism and 43 security and intelligence delegations from across the world’s continents, including more than 20 intelligence chiefs as well as senior officials and experts in national security and counter-terrorism.
Sharing information to tackle cross-border threats
Participants discussed strengthening security and intelligence cooperation, exchanging information and expertise, and developing joint strategies to confront cross-border threats, particularly the overlap between terrorism and organised crime, and to limit its impact on the security and stability of states.
Raising the readiness of the Libyan Intelligence Service
Al-Koni praised the outcomes of the meeting, stressing the need to build on them to develop cooperation and joint working mechanisms among the participating countries and to confront regional and international security challenges.
He also stressed the role of the intelligence service in protecting Libya and the need to improve its performance and readiness to detect and foil security threats and plots targeting the country, thereby strengthening national security and protecting the state’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, stability and national interests.
