Abdulnabi Holds Meetings on Education, Unifying Institutions and Cooperation With Italy

Abdulnabi discusses teachers’ dues, inspectors’ demands and cooperation with Italy

LIBYA – House of Representatives Speaker Salehin Abdulnabi has discussed teachers’ dues, the resumption of classes and the demands of education inspectors in separate meetings, as well as Libyan-Italian cooperation on reconstruction, parliamentary relations and the House’s position on the maritime memorandum of understanding with Turkey.

Teachers’ dues and the resumption of classes

On Wednesday, Abdulnabi discussed the procedures for settling teachers’ dues and returning pupils to school with the Libyan government’s Education Minister Jumaa Al-Jadid; Benghazi Education Controller Belaid Al-Werfalli; Idris Ajweili, director of the Benghazi Private Education Office; and Abdullah Al-Fakhri, director of the Al-Berka Educational Services Office.

He stressed the need to open schools and explained the steps taken in coordination with the Ministry of Finance to pay teachers’ salary differentials by the end of October. He also phoned the finance minister to stress the importance of paying part of the differentials under Law No. 4 of 2018 until the counts are completed at education control offices across the country.

Abdulnabi affirmed his support for teachers and his commitment to protecting their rights and settling their dues as quickly as possible. The education minister, the education controller and the relevant departments presented alternative plans to make up for lost learning and ensure the school year starts as soon as possible.

Inspectors’ demands and professional rights

Also on education, the Speaker on Wednesday reviewed with a delegation from the General Union of Educational Inspection and Guidance the professional and field difficulties facing inspectors, which affect their work in monitoring educational institutions, evaluating educational performance and improving educational outcomes.

The delegation presented its demands on job-related and financial rights, including approving the benefits due in line with the nature of field work, settling dues, improving working conditions and strengthening the professional standing of education inspectors in light of the burdens and responsibilities they bear.

According to the House of Representatives’ media office, the meeting is part of its engagement with those concerned with education and its effort to understand the challenges facing people working in the sector, in support of developing the education system and protecting job-related and professional rights.

Cooperation with Italy on reconstruction and parliamentary work

On foreign relations, Abdulnabi met Italy’s Consul General Filippo Colombo and his accompanying delegation at the headquarters of the House of Representatives’ Diwan in Benghazi, where the consul congratulated him on his election as Speaker and wished him success in his duties.

The meeting covered the historical relations and shared interests between Libya and Italy, particularly in the economic field, and opportunities for cooperation with Italian companies in rebuilding Libya, as well as developing relations between the House of Representatives and the Italian parliament.

Unifying institutions and the maritime memorandum

During the meeting, Abdulnabi affirmed his openness to all Libyans without exception, with the aim of unifying the institutions of the state and the country and ending the crisis. He also addressed the Libyan-Turkish memorandum of understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean, which the House of Representatives has approved and ratified.

Abdulnabi described the ratification as a sovereign decision that falls within the Libyan state’s right to look after its interests. He said Libyans were united on this position and that the agreement did not, in his assessment, affect the interests of other countries, while the Italian consul stressed the special nature of the relationship between the two countries and their peoples.
