Sharp Shortage of Diabetes Medicines Across Regions
LIBYA – Dania Abu Shraida, head of the endocrinology unit at Mitiga Hospital, said there was nothing new on the provision of diabetes medicines, describing the current crisis as worse than anything seen even during wartime.
Patients Turning to Unverified Herbal Mixes
Speaking to the Abaad platform, Abu Shraida said many patients had gone without medicines, driving some to turn to herbal mixes of unknown origin.
Situation in the South “Catastrophic”
She noted that the shortage of diabetes medicines affects the whole country, describing the situation in the south as catastrophic because of the acute shortage and unprecedented high prices when medicines are available.
No Unified Pricing or Oversight
Abu Shraida also said the shortage of treatments extends to private pharmacies, adding that even when medicines are available the market suffers from the absence of unified pricing and oversight and from the presence of smuggled treatments.
