Al-Jedi Proposes National Labour-Market Observatory to Link Education with Economic Needs

A national observatory for jobs and required specialisations

LIBYA – Economic and financial expert Ramzi Al-Jedi said tackling unemployment in Libya was a shared responsibility of educational institutions, planning bodies and the private sector, stressing that universities’ role should not be limited to awarding degrees but should include preparing graduates with the knowledge and skills needed for work and practical application.

Jobs data to guide education and training

Al-Jedi called, in comments to Sputnik, for the creation of a national labour-market observatory providing accurate data on required specialisations, available jobs and the skills the economy needs, to help align education and training policies with actual demand for competencies.

Major projects need skills prepared in advance

He explained that oil, gas, electricity and infrastructure projects require early planning of the specialisations and skills needed, and direct coordination between the bodies overseeing the projects and universities and technical and training institutes so that personnel are ready on the required timelines.

Job opportunities differ between cities and regions

He stressed the need to take account of differences in the country’s regional needs, because job opportunities and specialisations in Tripoli, Benghazi and Misrata may differ from those in Sebha and the south depending on the nature of economic activity and current and planned projects.
