Al-Tawati rules out floating the dinar under current conditions
Libya – House of Representatives Planning and Finance Committee member Fahmi Al-Tawati said floating the dinar cannot be applied amid the political and institutional division the country is witnessing and the absence of cohesive executive institutions, stressing that the House and the Planning and Finance Committee have not discussed any proposals on floating the currency.
Reforms and a safety net before any exchange-rate flexibility
Al-Tawati, in remarks exclusively to Asharq Al-Awsat, said moving to a more flexible exchange-rate system requires comprehensive economic and financial reforms.
He noted that any such step needs a social safety net and measures that limit its impact on purchasing power and living standards, even in countries that enjoy institutional stability.
