Al-Tawati calls for an inclusive legislative institution
LIBYA – House of Representatives member Fahmi Al-Tawati said the prospects for rapprochement between the House and the High Council of State have grown for the coming period, arguing that the House’s new presidency must learn from the parliamentary experiences Libya has been through since 2011 and work in a professional, institutional way so that the House becomes an inclusive space for Libyans of all political leanings.
Parliament’s constitutional and electoral duties
In comments to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Al-Tawati said the House’s duties under the Constitutional Declaration include overseeing the referendum on the constitution and organising the coming elections, in addition to exercising the usual powers of a parliament.
Sovereignty and foreign interests
He stressed that, at this stage, the legislative institution must take account of regional and international interference while also considering the interests of brotherly and friendly countries, in a way that safeguards Libya’s sovereignty, security and interests.
