Economic warning over four signs of a social crisis
LIBYA – Economist Saber Al-Wahsh has warned that Libya is, in his assessment, nearing a dangerous stage that could see what he called a “hunger revolution”, saying that four of the five factors he believes lead to such a scenario are now in place.
Eroding incomes and lost confidence
In a post on his personal Facebook page, Al-Wahsh said the four factors were the erosion of real incomes, disrupted access to basic needs, a sense of injustice, and a loss of confidence and hope.
A possible spark and a warning of the consequences
He said the fifth factor was the “spark”, which could come from a sudden rise in prices, measures affecting subsidies, widespread disruption to salary payments, or an incident that provokes public anger.
Al-Wahsh argued that the state was now “on the brink of the abyss”, warning that what he described as a hunger revolution could have devastating consequences, and said he hoped Libya would not reach that point.
