Arkeonews: Ancient Building With Frescoed Walls Discovered at Shatt Al-Badin Near Benghazi

Wall paintings reveal features of an ancient building

LIBYA – An ancient building whose interior walls are decorated with fresco paintings has been discovered at Shatt Al-Badin, near the city of Benghazi, during preliminary archaeological cleaning work, according to a news report published by the Turkish English-language site Arkeonews.

Theories of a large two-storey building

The report — followed and summarised by Al-Marsad — said that among the theories being considered, archaeologists believe the building may originally have been a large two-storey structure, making the discovery a promising one in an area rich in evidence of Greek and Roman heritage.

Limited resources hamper further excavation

The report noted that the limited resources allocated to archaeological work continue to hamper further excavation. It said the decorated interior walls were uncovered during preliminary cleaning work, and that it has not yet been possible to establish when the structure was built or what it was originally used for.
