ChemAnalyst: Restart of Two Methanol Plants in Libya Supports Local Supply to Industry

Production resumes after maintenance at two methanol plants

LIBYA – Two plants belonging to the Sirte Oil Company have resumed methanol production after a maintenance shutdown, a move that could increase the availability of the product on the local market, according to an economic report by the US site ChemAnalyst.

Methanol’s industrial uses

The report — followed and summarised by Al-Marsad — said methanol is used in the production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, solvents, adhesives and other industrial applications, and that higher local production could reduce the need for imports.

Actual output not yet announced

The report noted that neither the two plants’ total production capacity, the quantities actually produced nor the time needed to return to normal operating rates had been announced. It said the resumption of operations pointed to improved readiness in Libya’s chemical industry sector.
