Libyan-Algerian preparations to reopen the border crossing
LIBYA – A coordination meeting at the headquarters of the Dbeibah government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has discussed the procedures for reopening the Ghadames–Debdeb border crossing with Algeria. The meeting was chaired by Ambassador Ashraf Al-Taeb, director of the International Cooperation Department, and attended by representatives of the relevant Libyan sectors and bodies.
Boosting the movement of people and goods and trade
Participants stressed the importance of completing the implementation of joint understandings and of coordination between Libya and Algeria to bring the vital crossing back into operation, given its role in facilitating the movement of people and goods and boosting trade and contact between the two countries, as with the crossings with other neighbouring countries.
Completing operational and legal requirements
The meeting discussed the mechanisms and procedures needed to open the crossing in line with the governing laws, legislation and decisions. It stressed the need for coordination between the competent agencies and bodies, for completing the operational, logistical and staffing arrangements and for providing everything required to ensure the crossing is ready in line with approved procedures.
2023 and January 2026 minutes and the reopening date
The ministry said the meeting was part of the follow-up to the minutes of the Libyan-Algerian technical expert team on reopening the crossing, signed in Algiers on 9 November 2023, and to the outcomes of the preparatory experts’ meeting for the 15th session of the Libyan-Algerian High Executive Committee, signed in Tripoli on 29 January 2026.
The statement said the minutes of the latter meeting included, among other matters, both sides’ confirmation of their intention to begin operating the crossing before the end of 2026.
