Asweiti: Soaring Bread Production Costs and Diesel at 9 Dinars Could Push Two Loaves to One Dinar
LIBYA – Libyan political analyst Ibrahim Asweiti said the cost of producing bread has risen sharply, noting that diesel is selling at about 9 dinars on the black market and warning that prices could climb further amid what he described as the targeting of the Zawiya refinery and the burning of one of its large storage tanks.
Warnings Over Rising Bread Prices
Asweiti told Erem News that warnings from unionists and professionals in eastern and western Libya about a possible increase in the price of a loaf of bread amount to a clear message to officials to act to contain the problem.
He said this comes, in his words, amid widespread corruption and deepening electricity and water crises.
Fears of a Popular Uprising as Crises Mount
Asweiti predicted a popular uprising as crises accumulate and their effects reach citizens’ pockets, pointing to the possibility that the price of two loaves of bread could rise to one dinar.
