Benghazi Bakers’ Syndicate Head Denies Poor-Quality Flour Distribution, Calls for Fixed Bread Prices

Al-Araibi denies poor flour quality and links price rises to costs

LIBYA – Mahmoud Al-Araibi, head of the Benghazi Bakers’ Syndicate, has denied circulating reports that poor-quality flour was being distributed to bakeries in the eastern region, saying the flour due to be distributed is of good quality and that the situation is stable.

Pledge to intervene over high prices

In exclusive comments to Al-Masar TV, Al-Araibi said the General Command of the Armed Forces had pledged to intervene to address the rise in flour prices.

Production costs and bread prices

He explained that the higher cost of buying flour had been passed on to the price of bread, arguing that bakeries cannot be asked to sell below the actual cost of production.

He called for bread prices to be fixed across Libyan cities in a way that takes account of the rights of citizens and bakery owners as well as operating costs, warning against spreading inaccurate information that could stir up public opinion and deepen the crisis.
