Bouazza: Flour Hits 425 Dinars a Quintal, Calls for Bread Pricing That Reflects Costs

Call for official pricing to tackle the bread crisis

LIBYA – Ali Bouazza, head of the Higher Committee for Monitoring Bakeries, has called on the Ministry of Economy to set an official bread price that reflects production costs and protects both consumers and bakeries, after the price of a quintal of flour rose to 425 dinars in some areas because of exchange-rate fluctuations.

Eastern bakeries back at work

In comments to the Fawasel platform, Bouazza said most bakeries had closed on Saturday, before bakeries in the eastern region resumed work following promises from the Municipal Guard to address the problems and prices.

Allegations over flour quality

He accused some parties of exploiting the lack of oversight to sell bakeries in the east of the country flour he described as poor quality, at 280 dinars a quintal, according to his account.

The dollar and a proposal to activate the Grain Board

He added that the rise in the dollar had pushed up the cost of cooking oil, sugar, yeast, bread improvers and other materials, and called for the Grain Board to be activated to secure a strategic stockpile and regulate the work of flour mills.
