Boulos Warns Those Obstructing US Initiative in Libya of Measures With Serious Consequences

Boulos links mission’s extension to pressure on spoilers

LIBYA – US presidential adviser Massad Boulos has welcomed the Security Council’s decision to renew the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, saying the mission’s work complements the US initiative and efforts aimed at unifying the executive authority in a way that strengthens the sovereignty of the Libyan state.

Warning against obstructing the political process

According to remarks reported by Al-Masar TV, Boulos said Libya faced what he described as a historic opportunity, warning that some spoilers may believe they have an interest in disrupting the political transition.

He said the UN resolution and the US initiative recall the measures of Resolution 2174 on penalising those who obstruct or undermine the political transition in Libya, stressing that the United States would not hesitate to take measures with serious consequences against those who deliberately obstruct the initiative.

Elections and a Libyan-led process

Boulos said Washington would continue to support Libyan-led efforts, in coordination with the UN mission, leading to national elections.

He considered that the US initiative led by President Donald Trump offers a path toward a unified and stable Libya capable of realizing its full potential.
