Brak Hospital Director: 81 Food Poisoning Cases Linked to a Single Kitchen, Patients Stable

Food poisoning cases rise as source of food is traced

LIBYA – The director of Brak General Hospital, Dr Masoud Nasr, has given details of the food poisoning cases in Brak Al-Shati, which he linked to eating contaminated chicken, saying the total number of cases received by the hospital had reached 81 at the time of his remarks and that patients’ conditions ranged from mild to moderate.

On-duty doctor raised the alarm as cases rose

Speaking by phone to Libya Al-Ahrar TV, which broadcasts from Turkey — followed by Al-Marsad — Nasr said the on-duty doctor had alerted the hospital the previous evening to a rise in cases of gastrointestinal poisoning, after it had been receiving the usual four to five individual cases a day.

He added that when the number rose to seven, suspicions arose of a common food source. The doctor questioned the patients and looked into the circumstances, and it emerged that all the cases had come from the same kitchen.

Cases rose from 15 to 19, then to 81

He said the number of patients rose to 15 by 10pm and to 19 by midnight, before five more cases were recorded in the early morning, adding that the total number of cases admitted to hospital for poisoning stood at 81 at the time he spoke.

Patients treated, none in intensive care

The hospital director gave reassurance that the cases ranged from mild to moderate and that medical staff had provided the necessary treatment and taken the required measures. He said the situation was under control as of his remarks and that no case had required admission to intensive care.
