Libya’s national team eyes another continental achievement
LIBYA – A report by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has highlighted the Libyan national team’s preparations for its sixth appearance at the Africa Futsal Cup of Nations, being held in Morocco in 2026, and the bid by the “Mediterranean Knights” to add a new achievement to their continental record.
2008 title and third-place finishes in 2000 and 2024
The report, followed and summarised by Al-Marsad, noted that Libya won the title on home soil in 2008 and finished third twice — at the 2000 edition in Egypt and the 2024 edition in Morocco — reaching the podium three times. Libya also played at the 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cup finals.
Qualification past Namibia and group rivals
It said the team overcame Namibia in qualifying to reach the finals, and that the draw placed it in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Algeria and Zambia — a group that poses a major challenge to its ambitions.
Mohamed Khamis and coach Pereira da Silva
The report singled out Mohamed Khamis, who scored twice at the 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cup, noting that Libyan fans are pinning their hopes on him after his impressive performances, and that Brazilian coach Pereira da Silva hopes to turn the team’s preparations into a strong showing that puts it in contention for a second continental title.
