HCS Migration Committee Adopts Initial Draft of National Vision Ahead of Benghazi Conference

Migration committee prepares its vision for Benghazi conference

LIBYA – The High Council of State’s committee following up on irregular migration, chaired by Saeed Wanis and attended by its members at the council’s headquarters in Tripoli, has discussed its next strategic steps for tackling the challenges of migration and preparations to present a national vision at a conference to be hosted by the University of Benghazi.

A national vision for the Benghazi conference

According to the council’s media office, the meeting discussed and adopted the initial draft of the proposed comprehensive national vision for addressing irregular migration, ahead of presenting it at the International Conference on Combating Terrorism and Illegal Migration, which the University of Benghazi will host on 4 November.

The vision is due to incorporate the recommendations and scientific contributions that emerge from the conference to make it more comprehensive.

Legislative reform and institutional coordination

The vision includes a number of strategic pillars, chief among them legislative and regulatory reform, a review of the relevant laws and agreements, stronger coordination between the national institutions concerned, and an assessment of the role of international organisations operating in Libya, with the aim of building an integrated national approach to managing migration that takes into account national security requirements, national interests and the humanitarian and development dimensions of the issue.

The committee also reviewed arrangements for its participation in the conference, stressing the importance of drawing on its scientific outcomes and the specialist expertise taking part, to help enrich the vision and complete its preparation ahead of taking the necessary steps on it.
