Maritime gains outlined in a Greek report
LIBYA – An analytical report by the English-language Greek newspaper Kathimerini has examined the Libyan House of Representatives’ ratification of the maritime agreement signed with Turkey in 2019, saying the move came as no surprise.
The report — followed and summarised by Al-Marsad — said Turkey had invested heavily in Libya in recent years and had mediated a working understanding between the rival factions, which meant that, in its assessment, Ankara was not seen as a threat by eastern Libya.
Estimated gains in the economic zone
The report estimated that Libya would gain at least a 20% increase in its exclusive economic zone under the agreement, arguing that the clarity of these gains would make it difficult for any future Libyan leadership to adopt a different approach that would at the same time run counter to the country’s interests.
