Price Stabilisation Fund Explains How Imported Wheat, Fuel and Electricity Are Pushing Up Bread Prices

Imported wheat and electricity push up the cost of bread

LIBYA – Jamal Ewaid, deputy head of the Price Stabilisation Fund, has attributed rising bread prices to Libya’s reliance on imported wheat and the related shifts in global prices, shipping and insurance costs and the availability of foreign currency, as well as fuel and electricity problems that increase the cost of producing flour.

Mill running costs, transport and price differences between regions

In exclusive comments to the Fawasel platform, Ewaid said fuel shortages and power cuts raise the cost of running flour mills, forcing them to use generators or halt production.

He noted that higher costs of transporting and unloading wheat from the ports to mills and bakeries were causing price differences and supply shortages between regions.
