Libya – Formal and informal trade outweigh migration and security concerns, with Ras Ajdir and Dhehiba forming an open market.
An analytical report has highlighted the movement of people and goods across the border crossings between Libya and Tunisia, stressing that smooth passage is an issue with deep economic dimensions for both countries.
Importance beyond migration and security
The report, published by the Madagascar-based English-language site CapMad and whose main analytical points Al-Marsad followed and translated, said the importance of smooth border movement is not limited to migration dynamics or security, but covers a large share of formal and informal trade.
Lifeline for border regions
It added that this trade is a lifeline for south-eastern Tunisia and western Libya, describing the border as a vast informal open-air market that depends on relative freedom of movement for people and goods — except banned items — through the Ras Ajdir and Dhehiba border crossings.
