3 Dead and Widespread Damage to Homes in Murzuq
LIBYA – The director of the Libyan Red Crescent’s Murzuq branch, Rajab Baraka Yousef, reported 3 deaths and widespread damage to homes caused by floods and heavy rain that hit the entire city of Murzuq and neighbouring areas.
Deaths and Collapsed Homes
Yousef said in remarks to Libya Al-Ahrar TV, which broadcasts from Turkey and was followed by Al-Marsad, that the deaths included a girl at Murzuq city hospital, a person from a town near Murzuq, and a death in Taraghen municipality, noting that the deaths were caused by the collapse of homes built from sheet metal.
He said about 50 homes were damaged or destroyed, adding that teams worked to move residents to safe areas.
Support From the Red Crescent General Secretariat
He added that contact was made with the General Secretariat of the Libyan Red Crescent Society through the director of the branches department, and on recommendations from the society’s secretary-general, to assess conditions in areas including Umm al-Aranib.
He said the General Secretariat expressed readiness and provided the necessary support in the form of blankets, as part of a strategic plan to save lives and secure those affected.
Teams Ready Across the Murzuq Basin
Yousef concluded by thanking the General Secretariat and all teams working across the Murzuq basin, which stretches from Wadi Ataba to Qatrun and Zuwila, stressing that Red Crescent teams remain ready and continue efforts to save what can be saved despite the difficulties.
