Sand-Clogged Drainage Networks Worsen Rain Damage in Tripoli

Streets keep flooding despite clean-up work

LIBYA – Field reports by Agence France-Presse (AFP) and China’s Xinhua news agency have highlighted the damage caused by heavy rain and flooding in the capital, Tripoli, stressing that the city’s streets flood every year despite preparations for the rainy season.

Traffic disrupted as government orders urgent drainage

The two reports — whose main findings were followed and summarised by Al-Marsad — said the flooding had disrupted traffic in the capital, while Abdulhamid Dbeibah’s government instructed public services bodies to carry out urgent work to drain the water.

Desert sand blocks drains

The reports noted that local authorities spend the summer preparing the streets for the rainy season by cleaning drainage networks and sewer manholes, which are often blocked by sand carried by desert winds.

Clean-up has not stopped the problem recurring

They added that this cleaning and preparation work had not prevented Tripoli’s streets from flooding again whenever heavy rain falls.
