Sowan: Tripoli Flooding Exposed Accumulated Government Failures and No Plan to Help Victims

Sowan blames government policies for the deterioration

LIBYA – Democratic Party chairman Mohamed Sowan said the deterioration of conditions in Libya across various fields was the product of what he described as reckless policies and mistaken government practices over recent years.

Tripoli rains expose a crisis in managing services

Sowan said, in a statement issued by his media office, that the damage Tripoli suffered from the rains was not merely a passing weather event, but in his view exposed the scale of accumulated failure in managing facilities and services, amid incapacity and worsening crises.

Criticism of the absence of a damage tally and compensation

He expressed sympathy with those affected who had lost relatives or property, criticising what he saw as the absence of even an official statement from the authorities responsible tallying the damage and announcing a plan to help the victims, despite the scale of the losses.

Questions over responsibility towards citizens

Sowan asked whether it made sense to keep entrusting those authorities with responsibilities towards citizens, given what he described as their failure to respond.
