Greek newspaper examines the gains from opening Libya’s airspace
LIBYA – An analytical report published by the English-language Greek newspaper To Vima has examined Libya’s announcement that restrictions imposed on civil aviation by the United Nations 11 years ago have been lifted, and the possible expansion in overflight traffic and the revenue it generates.
Sharp rise in overflight requests
The report — followed and summarised by Al-Marsad — said the opening of the airspace to wider international traffic had been reflected in monthly overflight permit requests for the coming winter season, which reached 62,000, compared with only 2,000 the previous year.
Potential revenue despite limited flights
According to the report, the expected increase in overflight traffic could generate significant revenue for Libya, while direct international passenger flights remain limited and are confined to a small number of airlines that have long served destinations including Tunisia, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
