UN: NOC Responded to 92% of Methane Emission Alerts

Environmental indicator follows training for NOC staff in Tunis

LIBYA – The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) have announced that the National Oil Corporation (NOC) responded to 92% of methane emission alerts, a rate the announcement said confirmed the corporation’s commitment to embedding sustainable environmental performance in Libya’s oil and gas sector.

Workshop in Tunis from 18 to 22 October

The announcement followed a specialised workshop to train focal points on the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) and the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP 2.0). It was held in Tunis from 18 to 22 October under the direct supervision of NOC Chairman Masoud Suleiman, as part of the corporation’s efforts to meet its international environmental commitments.

UN-EU partnership to train focal points

The workshop was run in cooperation with UNEP, IMEO and the European Union Delegation to Libya, with technical supervision from the specialist consultancy Carbon Limits. It built on programmes previously held in Tripoli and aimed to improve the skills of technical staff at the NOC and its subsidiaries in monitoring and verifying emissions and responding promptly to alerts.

Companies’ and departments’ role in the environmental response

The achievement was the result of continuous work and close coordination between focal points at the various companies and the NOC’s General Department of Health, Safety, Environment, Security and Renewable Energy, reflecting the corporation’s commitment to international efforts to protect the climate and cut methane emissions.
