Emergency teams continue to deal with the effects of the rain
LIBYA – Mohamed Akreem, spokesman for the General Company for Water and Wastewater, said the company had taken a series of precautionary measures to deal with a wave of heavy, thundery rain that several areas of the country had seen.
Cleaning and preparing rainwater drainage systems
Akreem said, in a phone interview on the news bulletin of Libya Al-Ahrar TV, which broadcasts from Turkey and which Al-Marsad followed, that the company is cleaning and preparing rainwater drainage systems across various areas to receive the volumes that have fallen in a number of cities.
Suction tankers in Nesma, Mizda and Jaqiqa
He said the company’s teams were among the first agencies present in the affected areas of Nesma, Mizda and Jaqiqa, where the bottlenecks were dealt with using the company’s suction tankers, in coordination with the General Committee of the National Emergency Company, of which the General Company for Water and Wastewater is a member.
He stressed that the company’s teams are continuing to follow up on the work in those areas, and that when the higher committee asks for assistance, the teams are sent immediately.
Wells brought into operation and floodwater pumped away
He added that, on their field visit, after arriving on Thursday evening once they had finished other work in the affected areas, the teams brought a number of wells into operation in Nesma and carried out water-suction operations in Nesma and Mizda.
Areas without adequate infrastructure
Akreem said some areas do not have adequate infrastructure and will be dealt with by suction tankers, while areas connected to the public network rely on rainwater drainage systems whose capacity, he said, is limited in light of climate change and an increase in rainfall volumes.
Numbers for the main reports room
He reassured the public that numbers for the main reports room are available — 0213608870 and 0910349051 — and urged people to take care, be cautious, and follow the instructions issued by the Interior Ministry’s bodies and the security agencies, in order to protect lives and property.
A further batch of tankers due in December 2026
Akreem said the company received a number of tankers during 2026, while the rest of the batch will arrive during December 2026 ahead of their distribution to the various areas of Libya. He appealed to decision-makers to support the company with more resources and machinery so that it can keep pace with neighbouring countries in water and sanitation.
Suction operations in Misrata, Bani Walid and Sirte
He said that the company’s teams had been carrying out water-suction operations in the central region — including Misrata and Bani Walid over recent days — and in Sirte, with work continuing into the early hours of Thursday morning.
Encroachment on drainage systems
He added that the western region and areas of the Western Mountain had also seen rainfall, and that the company’s teams were present. He pointed to problems caused by encroachment on rainwater-drainage and sewage systems through illegal connections, and by the theft of parts of the drainage systems and their chambers — practices he said had caused numerous bottlenecks on public roads.
