Al-Orfi: Salary Unification Is a Parliamentary Demand, and a Technical Committee Is Studying a Unified Pay Scale

Salary unification back at the centre of parliamentary debate

LIBYA – House of Representatives member Abdulmonem Al-Orfi said unifying salaries is one of the demands the House has been calling for, particularly as more voices call for the wide disparity in pay among workers across state sectors to be addressed.

Disparity weighs on living conditions

Al-Orfi told Sputnik that the disparity in salaries has had a direct impact on citizens’ living conditions, with some families struggling to meet their basic needs.

Allowances still tied to the nature of the work

He pointed to the need for a unified pay scale that achieves greater fairness among workers, while taking into account the nature of each sector through special allowances and job benefits such as hazard pay and other allowances.

A technical committee to prepare the scale

Al-Orfi added that the House had taken steps in this direction by forming a committee of technical experts, specialists and House members to study the preparation of a unified pay scale, ahead of presenting it to parliament.

The goal is social justice

He stressed that the committee’s aim is to achieve greater social justice and equality among workers in the various state sectors, while keeping the exceptions for allowances and benefits that the nature of certain jobs requires.
