Zweiri reads Ankara’s calculations in the Eastern Mediterranean
LIBYA – Political analyst Dr Mahjoob Zweiri has said the latest development in Libyan-Turkish relations is likely to unsettle Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who he said had believed Israel would have the upper hand in Mediterranean waters.
Unifying Libya among Ankara’s goals
Zweiri said, according to Al Jazeera Net, Ankara’s goals do not stop at gas exploration but also include helping to resolve Libya’s long-running dispute and seeking to unify the state, because Turkey favours the model of a centralised state, as it did in Syria, according to his reading.
Regional repositioning in the Mediterranean
He said the Libyan step reflects a reshaping of Turkish foreign policy and a rapprochement with parties Ankara had not previously been close to, describing what is happening as part of a regional repositioning by Turkey against Israel, Cyprus and Greece.
