47 Libyan MPs Back US Initiative for a Small Committee to Draft a Political Roadmap
Libya – Forty-seven members of the House of Representatives have declared their support for a US initiative conveyed by Special Envoy Massad Boulos, which calls for the formation of a small committee tasked with drafting a roadmap for the next phase of Libya’s political process.
A Broad National Will
In a statement issued in Benghazi on Friday, the lawmakers said lasting stability remains dependent on a broad national will that places Libya’s interests above all other considerations, unifies state institutions, consolidates security, safeguards national wealth and reinforces the country’s sovereignty and independent decision-making.
They said they were closely following the various initiatives and efforts aimed at moving the political process towards a more stable and effective phase, amid a prolonged political deadlock and its damaging impact on state-building.
A Small Committee and Political Roadmap
The MPs said they had reviewed the US initiative conveyed by Boulos, which proposes establishing a small committee to prepare a roadmap for the coming phase.
According to the statement, the initiative is intended to narrow differences among influential Libyan actors, coordinate political efforts across the country’s eastern and western regions, address the continuing institutional divide and create the conditions for a comprehensive national settlement.
Support for the Initiative
The lawmakers announced their support for the initiative and their commitment to it, describing it as one of the serious opportunities that could be built upon at this stage.
They stressed that any resulting proposals should be grounded in national principles and produce practical, implementable solutions that reflect the will of the Libyan people and meet their aspirations for stability, development and an end to the prolonged transitional period.
Readiness to Remove Obstacles
The MPs also expressed their readiness to support every responsible national effort aimed at ensuring the initiative’s success and removing the political and legislative obstacles standing in its way.
They said such efforts should contribute to unifying institutions, strengthening stability and establishing a unified state capable of carrying out its responsibilities and meeting the aspirations of its citizens.
The statement concluded by stressing that Libya needs genuine national consensus and a responsible political partnership that places the logic of the state above the logic of division and opens the way towards a more stable and prosperous future for all Libyans.
