Prosecution uncovers widespread irregularities in identity data

LIBYA – Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour has revealed widespread irregularities in national identity records which, according to what he presented, included more than 315,000 national ID numbers granted in violation of the law and thousands of passports issued using forged data, as well as the freezing of public treasury funds linked to those violations, including salaries and pensions.

34,000 family records and thousands of cases under investigation

In a speech on Tuesday at the “Threats to National Identity Data” seminar in Tripoli, carried by the Libyan News Agency (LANA), Al-Sour said the prosecution had examined more than 34,000 family registration records, opened investigations into more than 4,500 cases and identified over 7,600 passports whose data did not meet professional standards.

National ID numbers suspended, passports and voter cards withdrawn

He added that the prosecution’s measures had included deleting 442 family records, suspending 8,662 national ID numbers, issuing a circular for the withdrawal of 1,855 passports, and withdrawing and suspending 571 voter cards.

Funds frozen in dinars and dollars

He said sums linked to the falsification of identity data had been frozen, amounting to 84.5 million dinars in salaries and pensions, 24.6 million US dollars in foreign currency and 3.8 million dinars linked to the head-of-household grant.

420 cases referred to the courts and 44 convictions
