Bangladeshis Returned From Libya Recount Kidnapping and Torture

Bangladeshi migrants repatriated after some were exploited

LIBYA – The English-language Bangladeshi newspaper Dhaka Tribune has reported that 174 undocumented Bangladeshi nationals have voluntarily returned home from Libya on a Buraq Air flight from the capital, Tripoli.

Flight lands in Dhaka early on 27 October

The report — followed and summarised by Al-Marsad — said the returnees arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the Bangladeshi capital in the early hours of 27 October.

Coordination between the Dbeibah government, the IOM and Bangladesh

The report said the Dbeibah government coordinated the return with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the Bangladeshi embassy in Libya. It said most of the returnees had entered Libya after being lured by human traffickers who promised to get them to Europe across the Mediterranean through irregular routes.

Accounts of kidnapping and torture as safe returns continue

The report quoted several returnees as saying they had been kidnapped and tortured at various times during their stay in Libya. It added that coordination is continuing between the Dbeibah government and the four bodies involved to secure the safe return of other Bangladeshi nationals held in various detention centres across the country.
