Bashagha Criticises Government Celebrations, Calls for Accountability Over Flood Damage

Bashagha questions the authorities’ responsibility in times of crisis

LIBYA – Former Libyan prime minister Fathi Bashagha has questioned the authorities’ ability to run the country amid what he described as casualties, lost livelihoods, the disrupted education of generations, flooded streets and one crisis after another, criticising what he saw as a focus on celebrations and media images instead of shouldering responsibility.

How governments should be judged when disaster strikes

In a post on his personal Facebook page, Bashagha said a government’s performance is measured not by the number of festivals or the scale of spending, but by its ability to protect lives, keep daily life running, respond to disasters and hold those who fall short to account.

Call to identify those responsible and prevent a repeat

He stressed Libyans’ right to know what happened, who bears responsibility and what measures will be taken to prevent such tragedies from recurring, arguing that the state’s responsibility is tested when disasters strike, not when celebrations are held.

Condolences to the people of Tripoli

He concluded his post by offering condolences and sympathy to the people of Tripoli, praying for mercy for the victims, recovery for the injured and the protection of the city and all of Libya’s cities.
