Expanding Irini into a broader security operation
LIBYA – A news report published by the European network Euronews said the European Union was moving to expand its naval mission in the Mediterranean off the Libyan coast.
Russian shadow fleet and maritime infrastructure
The report, which Al-Marsad followed and translated key points from, said the EU was seeking through the expansion to counter what it described as Russia’s “shadow fleet”, protect maritime infrastructure, and practise naval diplomacy with North African states.
Extension until 31 March 2029
According to the report, Brussels is preparing to turn its naval mission into a broader security operation, while a draft European decision shows Irini’s work being extended until 31 March 2029.
Proposed budget of €16.88 million
The report said the proposed budget amounted to €16.88 million, at a time when the mission’s current mandate is due to end in March 2027.
