Teachers’ rights and suspended classes in the west
Libya – Ashraf Aburawi, head of the Greater Tripoli teachers’ union, said the lesson allowance, health insurance and payment of salary differentials are teachers’ rights rather than mere demands, noting that classes have been suspended in Tripoli schools and the western region over those demands.
Strike option and hope of resuming classes
Speaking exclusively to Libya Al-Hadath television, Aburawi said a general strike would be put forward at the start of next week if the demands are not implemented, expressing hope that solutions would be reached and the rights fulfilled in a way that allows classes to resume.
Ministry powers and required legislation
He said implementing these rights falls within the Education Ministry’s powers and available means, and that the ministry shows understanding of teachers’ demands and is working on a mechanism to deliver them within those means. He added that the unified pay scale and payment of differentials under Law No. 4 require legislation from the House of Representatives.
