In Abuja, Tetteh Calls for Stronger African Union–UN Cooperation on Peacekeeping

Tetteh calls for broader African and UN coordination

LIBYA – The UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, took part in the opening plenary session of the Consultative Forum on Strengthening the Functional Performance of the African Union Peace and Security Architecture in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, held under the theme of reactivating the African peace and security architecture in an era of fragmentation and eroding norms.

Security challenges and activating partnerships

According to the UN mission’s media office, Tetteh stressed the need to address evolving peace and security risks in an increasingly multipolar and fragmented environment through coherent responses, closer cooperation between AU member states and the bloc’s Regional Economic Communities, clearer definitions of the principles of complementarity and subsidiarity, and stronger AU–UN coordination using the mechanisms of the joint UN–AU framework on peace and security.

Continent’s responsibility for peace support operations

She noted that, with the number of peacekeeping missions on the continent declining, the AU and its member states are likely to face the challenge of shouldering a greater share of responsibility for African-led peace support operations, including their financing.
