Municipal Guard Sets Price at Four Long Loaves or Three Traditional Libyan Loaves for One Dinar in Benghazi

Tighter checks on subsidised and unsubsidised bakeries

LIBYA – The Municipal Guard, affiliated with the Libyan Government, has called on bakery owners in Benghazi and in municipalities that have received quotas of flour subsidised by the General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces to collect their quotas quickly and start work, as part of measures to ensure the flour reaches those entitled to it and to ease the burden on citizens.

Mandatory price for all bakeries

The Municipal Guard said that, on the instructions of its head, Maj Gen Abdulmonem Mohammed Al-Mahshash, Municipal Guard and Criminal Investigation Agency patrols would visit bakeries in Benghazi and in the municipalities that have received subsidised flour — both those that have collected their quotas and those that have not — to check compliance with the official price.

It set the price at four loaves of long bread for one dinar and three loaves of traditional Libyan (muhawwar) bread for one dinar.

Violators face closure

The Municipal Guard’s media office stressed that the price is binding on all bakeries, whether they use subsidised or unsubsidised flour, and that legal action, up to and including closure, will be taken against violators.

It added that, with subsidised flour now available and quotas reaching bakeries, there is no longer any justification for delaying collection, refusing to operate or raising the price of bread for citizens.
