Asbaq: Developing Agriculture Is Essential for Food Security and Economic Stability — Draft Recommendations for Unified Agricultural Policies
LIBYA – Saeed Asbaq, chair of the House of Representatives Agriculture Follow-up Committee, on Sunday opened the first conference on developing the agricultural sector and strengthening food security in Libya, organised by the committee under the slogan “Effective agricultural policies to boost sustainable agricultural production”.
Policies to Raise Production and Support Farmers
Asbaq stressed the importance of developing the agricultural sector as one of the vital sectors linked to food security and economic stability in Libya.
He emphasised the need to put in place effective agricultural policies that help increase local production, support farmers, encourage investment and protect natural resources, alongside making use of scientific research and national expertise.
Balrouin: Food Security Requires Uniting Efforts
Rasmi Balrouin, acting head of the House of Representatives Bureau, also delivered remarks welcoming attendees and stressing the importance of food security amid the climate changes the world is witnessing.
Balrouin noted that recommendations from conferences and events in this field should focus on raising public awareness of food-security issues, emphasising the importance of joining and unifying efforts to reach the best solutions and address the challenges facing the sector.
Discussions on Investment and Scientific Research
The conference included a number of sessions and discussions covering the main challenges facing Libya’s agricultural sector and ways to develop agricultural production and strengthen investment and scientific research, with the participation of specialists, academics, experts and relevant bodies.
Draft Recommendations Ahead of House Adoption
At the close of the conference, a draft set of recommendations was prepared with a view to putting it forward for wider discussion and hearing the comments and proposals of specialists and the relevant authorities, before it is finalised and adopted by the House of Representatives.
The proposal is intended to serve as a guiding reference on agricultural policies for executive bodies, helping to unify vision and strengthen planning to advance the agricultural sector and achieve food security in Libya.
The opening ceremony was attended by specialists, academics, researchers and experts, as well as representatives of bodies and institutions concerned with the agricultural sector.
