Using Brega gas instead of flaring it
LIBYA – Restarting the gas processing unit at the Brega oil complex could benefit both the energy sector and the environment by recovering 60 million cubic feet of gas instead of flaring it and directing it to power generation and industrial use, according to an economic report published by the Indian website Business Upturn.
Better supplies and more efficient oil operations
The report — followed and summarised by Al-Marsad — said the restart was part of the Tripoli-based National Oil Corporation’s strategy to recover usable gas, boost domestic energy supplies and improve the efficiency of oil and gas operations.
Caveat on operations and sustained recovery
The website said it had been unable to verify independently, through official documents, the precise details of the unit’s current operating status or how long it is expected to keep running.
It added that diverting 60 million cubic feet of previously flared gas to productive use would deliver a double benefit for energy and the environment, provided recovery is sustained at that rate, noting that the report did not identify which users would receive the additional gas supplies.
