Society of Petroleum Engineers Helps Prepare Young Libyans for the Energy Sector

Training and professional networks for a new energy generation

LIBYA – The Libya Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is expanding its activities to prepare a new generation of energy-sector professionals, as plans to raise oil and gas output increase demand for the technical expertise needed for exploration, drilling and field development, according to an economic report published by the South African website Energy Capital & Power.

Professional development and outreach to university students

The report — followed and summarised by Al-Marsad — said SPE Libya was helping prepare young workers through professional activities and outreach to university students, offering early-career opportunities for technical and professional development and linking them to the international petroleum engineering community.

Ali Abu Ikhzam’s contribution, digitalisation and automation

It said Ali Abu Ikhzam, Young Professionals Chair of SPE Libya, had contributed to the society’s international network and technical publications on subjects including digitalisation and automation, while SPE student chapters at universities offered another route into the profession.

These chapters give students the chance to explore technical subjects and connect with specialists and the petroleum engineering community, creating an early link between university education and the technical needs of Libya’s exploration and production sector.

Energy JEEL initiative trains more than 900 young people

The report added that SPE Libya is taking part in the government’s Energy JEEL initiative, which develops young people through training and knowledge sharing in energy, noting that more than 900 young men and women have been trained to build a base of engineers, technicians and other specialists for the sector.
