Meeting reviews teachers’ entitlements and stability of the school year

LIBYA – The Dbeibah government’s Minister of Education, Mohamed Al-Qaryou, chaired an expanded meeting attended by the ministry’s deputy ministers for education control offices and for the general office, along with a number of education officials, the head of the General Teachers’ Union and members of the union, to follow up on teachers’ demands and on measures to keep the school year running smoothly.

Hourly teaching allowance, health insurance and Education Law arrears

The meeting reviewed progress in calculating the hourly teaching allowance owed to hourly-paid teachers and the steps to include education-sector employees in the public health insurance scheme. It also reviewed the tally of arrears due under Education Law No. 4 of 2018, ahead of the necessary action in coordination with the relevant authorities.

Addressing demands and keeping classes on schedule

Al-Qaryou said the ministry was continuing to work on appropriate solutions to teachers’ legitimate demands within the approved legal and administrative procedures and in cooperation with the relevant authorities, in line with the prime minister’s instructions and his follow-up of priority files in the education sector.

He stressed the need to balance protecting teachers’ rights and improving their working conditions with keeping classes on schedule and ensuring that schooling continues. He praised the national role of the General Teachers’ Union in supporting efforts to resume regular classes, protecting pupils’ and students’ right to education and strengthening the stability of educational institutions and their ability to carry out their educational and national mission.
